Summary

This chapter has traced and discussed the matatu logic of practice in relation to the matatu conditions of existence, conditions that have contributed to the creation of this logic. The matatu sector as a fare-paying-passengers field within a larger field of fare-paying-passenger transport system and within the Kenyan wider political, economic and social context is at the centre of struggles and competition with and from different stakeholders and interest groups. The key points of the chapter are as follows:

• The circumstances associated with the matatu sector conditions of existence in Kenya have produced matatu habitus and norms that have in turn produced the matatu logic of practice. The players in the matatu industry in Kenya have evolved their own sets of rules, structures and ways of doing things in order to secure economic survival and maintain control.

• The matatu entrepreneurship has developed an elaborate self-organizing system consisting of associations, contracts, regulations and mechanisms for relating with the state.

• The matatu position, as clearly depicted in the matatu tree presented in Chapter 3, shows how this sector has struggled to exist, and how the government and politicians have all in one way or the other contributed to the logic of practice, a logic which according to Bourdieu is not the logic of the logician.
